Direct Support Professional
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To teach, assist and model those skills and behaviors that enable the persons living at each residence to participate as fully as possible in the normal activities of daily life; to assist in the development and implementation of goals set by and for the residents.
QUALIFICATIONS: A high school or equivalency diploma is required. While experience is not necessary, any work history with special needs population or in human services is helpful. It is expected that employees are motivated by a belief in the equality of all persons regardless of disability; that direct support workers possess genuine caring, respect, sensitivity and flexibility; that they are willing to learn, to take direction from supervisors, and to work as responsible team members. It is also required that workers possess good skills in observation and communication, as well as fluency in the English language. Direct support workers must have a valid R.I. driver's license.
SCHEDULE: The residence director/coordinator will determine the number of hours, hours of shifts, and days of the week for setting the schedule of the direct support worker. Flexibility in scheduling may be necessary to ensure adequate staffing on any shift, and in emergencies such as snowstorms or hospitalization of residents.
- To teach and assist residents in their adult daily activities (personal hygiene, behavioral management, community interaction, speech and language, physical and occupational therapy, recreation and socialization, vocational development and self-advocacy) as determined by the residence director, and after the completion of appropriate training.
- To conduct those medical procedures authorized by the residence nurse after completion of the required training activities (including, but not limited to, administering medication, taking blood pressures, determining weight, transporting to, and participating in, medical appointments.
- To engage the residents in activities and social interaction with staff, housemates and community; to model appropriate leisure and adult social skills with the residents at home and in the community; to reinforce residents positively throughout daily activities
- To observe and report promptly any serious behavioral, medical, or other concerns about a resident's status to the residence director, assistant residence director or coordinator
- To conduct record-keeping activities as determined by the consultants, residence directors, or administrators (including, but not limited to, medication sheets, incident reports, progress notes, daily log, program data, and seizure reports).
- To follow all agency policies and procedures
- To participate in training required for the proper performance of duties
- To attend staff meetings and ISP meetings as scheduled
- To participate in assessing residents' needs and in team planning for the annual ISP
- To assist the residents in the care of their home with cooking, cleaning, laundry and shopping
- To carry out other specific duties within the home as situations may dictate
